The McLaren MP4-12C Coupe marked a historic return for McLaren Automotive to the road-car market. After producing the legendary McLaren F1, the company spent many years focusing mainly on Formula 1.
When the MP4-12C launched in 2011, it became the first mass-produced road car from McLaren since the F1. The project combined Formula 1 engineering with modern supercar technology. Development began in the mid-2000s, and the model quickly positioned itself as a serious rival to supercars like the Ferrari 458 Italia. Production continued until 2014 before being replaced by the McLaren 650S.
The MP4-12C Coupe features a 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine known as the M838T. This engine produces around 600–625 horsepower and 600 Nm of torque, delivering impressive performance for its era.
The supercar accelerates from 0–100 km/h in about 3.1–3.3 seconds, while the top speed reaches approximately 330–333 km/h. Power is delivered through a 7-speed dual-clutch SSG transmission that allows lightning-fast gear changes.
McLaren also engineered the car around a lightweight Carbon MonoCell chassis, a carbon-fiber structure that dramatically improves rigidity while reducing weight.
