Dubai has intensified its efforts to curb disruptive and excessively loud driving by expanding the emirate’s network of advanced noise-detection radars. The move is part of a wider campaign to enhance public comfort, reduce noise pollution, and ensure more respectful road behaviour, officials confirmed on Monday.

The upgraded system—already active in several high-traffic zones—uses smart sensors capable of identifying vehicles that exceed legal noise limits. Authorities say the expansion aligns with Dubai’s broader strategy to create a more peaceful and safe urban environment, protecting residents from unnecessary disturbances caused by modified exhausts and reckless vehicle noise.

High-Performance Cars Under the Spotlight

While the initiative aims at all vehicles, it is especially relevant to owners of supercars, hypercars, and modified performance vehicles, which naturally produce higher exhaust notes.

However, the new regulations do not target legitimate, factory-spec luxury cars. Naturally engineered engine sound from vehicles like Ferrari, Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce, or AMG models typically remains within acceptable decibel limits, provided the exhaust system has not been altered.

The initiative supports Dubai’s long-term strategy to build a more civil and harmonious city environment. According to Dubai Police, the latest generation of radars uses integrated sensors and audio-mapping technology to capture the exact source and intensity of vehicle noise. When a vehicle exceeds the approved sound threshold, the system automatically records the incident, capturing video and data that clearly identify the offending vehicle.

The enhanced radars are designed to detect a wide range of violations including excessively loud engine revving, illegal exhaust modifications, and vehicles fitted with disruptive audio systems. Authorities say the technology operates around the clock and performs accurately even in high-traffic or multi-lane conditions.

Strict Penalties for Violators

Drivers caught exceeding noise limits face fines of up to Dh2,000 and 12 black points, according to police guidelines. In the case of modifications performed illegally, vehicles may be impounded, with release fees of Dh10,000 applied in certain cases.

Officials emphasized that the penalties are designed not only as a punishment but also as a deterrent to unsafe and inconsiderate behaviour. Excessive vehicle noise, they say, affects families, disturbs residential communities, and contributes to stress and sleep disruption.

While the noise radars represent a significant technological upgrade, Dubai Police confirmed that traditional patrol monitoring will continue. Officers will carry out focused inspections, especially during nighttime hours and weekends—periods when irresponsible driving behaviour tends to increase.

Authorities will also intensify awareness campaigns, reminding motorists that vehicle modifications must follow UAE regulations and that noise pollution is considered a form of public nuisance.
